Speaking of Surreal!
It was exciting to be part of Someone’s Nuit Blanche event again this year; great to reinforce connections with the Cabbagetown creative community.
One colour, one fine print proof at a time, I worked with Someone to print a limited edition broadside, a poem by the 2009 Griffin Poetry Prize winner, A. F. Moritz. We were delighted to be offered the opportunity to publish 'The Shore', [The Sentinel] a misty fall vision of the waters edge, opening our new literary art print series, Water.
We chose 'Waterworld', an image that Susana Wald and I had collaborated on, to illustrate the broadside. The balance of nine prints to be included in Water, will emerge under the editorial leadership of Beatriz Hausner.
The fine print broadsides were produced for distribution to guests of Nuit Blanche, community supporters and friends. The balance of the prints will be available in the Someone online store in a week or so. To produce the signed and lettered sets of all nine pieces in the Water series, 26 copes of 'The Shore' will be gathered together with eight other prints, in an archival folio.

Angels
The angel images continue to be inspired by how angelic humans around us in every day life really are. Completely typical, these myriad sorts of people provide wonders of vision, perception, humor and analysis that make painting their beneficent doppelgangers an important, demanding, urgent and abundant experience. Along with their real-life models, the angel images augment and enhance my sense of family, connectedness to people in my community, the world of information and ideas I consume and my ever-developing vision of the future.
Animals
Out of the dusty closet, off the shelf and onto the studio table. These images of animals started with an old black leather coat cut into pieces and cemented to 1/4" acid-free binder's board. I added breyered wood block impressions in metallic silver to the bumpy surface, using a type-high wood block carved by my son in his youth. The beginning textures and marks have suggested animals to me – their eyes, the leathery nature of their skin, the similarity with human animals, their long suffering and magnificence. This series has been with me, waiting for attention, for a while – an ongoing adventure.
Automatic drawing
Surrealism, and the realm of ideas associated with dream images, has fascinated me since I was a teenager. I was lucky to meet Ludwig Zeller and Susana Wald in the 70's. In those days, being part of the Dreadnaught Press, designing and publishing some of Ludwig's works as limited edition books and ephemera, I met Ludwig and Susana and their wonderful family. Susana was always present, adding to the idea exchange and translating for our publishing meetings, raising a family, working as an instructor at Sheridan College and running Oasis Publications. All the while, she was painting brilliant images on canvas and producing the most wonderful one-of-a-kind, hand-made books of surrealist poetry and images.
Now, I have had the exciting opportunity to work one-to-one with Susana, and I couldn't be happier with the way our collaborations have begun.
About the Angels
About the angels
In our internet accessible world, where all things are close at hand, our children are burdened with the weight of their talents, capabilities and the plethora of choices and possibilities available to them. The plan in each of them that guides the self-realization process is not quite in place. The angel represents our children and ourselves. The series here represents the awakening of the creative. An appreciation of the feminine principle.
The angel is everyone’s child.
